What is a mastermind?

You may remember the name Fritz Gilbert. In addition to being well-known from his Retirement Manifesto blog, he has been on the show before. In episode 284 we discussed how he invests in himself by working to improve dogs’ lives through his non-profit organization, Freedom for Fido.

Masterminds are mentoring groups created by peers to harness the power of shared experiences by helping each other work through common problems and learning from each other’s successes and failures.

These groups have been around for ages and were first popularized by Napoleon Hill in the early 1900s with his book, The Law of Success.

I’ve actually been a part of a podcasting mastermind group since 2016 which has helped me bring in new ideas and further this podcast.

How Fritz’s mastermind is structured

In the article, Fritz describes why he created an in-person retirement mastermind in his town and how they laid out ground rules to increase confidence in the group and help them stay on task.

To keep the group intimate and private, they all agreed to keep the information shared in the group 100% confidential and to cap the membership at 10 members.

They also rotate the leadership to keep the topics fresh and each month they do a deep dive into that month’s leader’s current situation.

What Fritz has learned from this group

Fritz has gained valuable insights by being a part of this retirement mastermind. He feels that it is due to surrounding himself with like-minded people who are navigating a similar journey in life. By having the ground rules laid out, group members feel free to openly discuss their retirement goals, concerns, and challenges.

This exchange of ideas and perspectives enables them to gain valuable insights that can help shape their retirement plans. By hearing others’ stories and learning from their successes and failures, members of the mastermind group can make more informed decisions about their own retirement paths.
